Manic Monday ~ Mental Music to Motivate

In my "younger" days, every Monday morning use to take off at 5:00 am for a 10-12 mile country run to start my week. There were three things I would never leave without: chewing gum, a water bottle tucked into my running belt, and my iPod (music). I could make it through almost 2 hours of non stop running. But, one day the music stopped playing. I was out for my weekly run when out of the blue I was bitten on my calf by a farm dog that ran up behind me. I was in brief shock not knowing what just happened. I had my earphones plugging my ears with rock and roll keeping my beat. That day, the music died. I was afraid to listen to music in fear I would be oblivious to another predator ready to pounce from behind. I was also lacking in my pace. Humming to myself didn't help any either! In fact, I began stopping during my run because I was "thinking" too much.

Fast forward a year and I invited a few close friends to join me on my route as we were all training for the half marathon. My good friend, Carol, walked out to our starting point and then put her earbuds in. I was interested in how we were going to get through our run. About 7 miles in and 5 to go on our route, we were feeling the urge for our second wind to pick up. And it came with the help of Carol! All of the sudden she started picking up our pace... all to the motivation of the song she was playing on her IPod. The song: Rocky's theme song, Eye of the Tiger! Not only did she pick up the pace, but determination was written all over her face!! Needless to say, I was inspired too!!

Music is a GREAT motivator for exercisers! Even group exercise classes don't go without music, especially music with good bpm (beats per minute).

So here are some all time favorites to download (based on popularity surveys):

1. Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

2. Lose Yourself – Eminem

3. Work Hustle, Kill – Rob Bailey & The Hustle Standard

4. Can’t Be Touched – Body Head Bangerz

5. Good Feeling – Flo Rida

6. Hungry – Rob Bailey & The Hustle Standard

7. Back In Black – AC/DC

8. Till I Collapse – Eminem

9. Gonna Fly Now (Rocky 1 Theme) – Bill Conti

10. Mama Said Knock You Out – LL Cool J

11. Killing in the Name – Rage Against The Machine

12. You Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC

What's your motivational beat??
